Taro-Kun: It’ll Be Worth Something Someday
Opening Reception: Saturday, May 5, 2012 (On view through June 2)
The Public Trust • 2919-C Commerce St • Dallas TX 75226

About the exhibition
It’ll Be Worth Something Someday, is the latest body of work by Dallas based artist Taro-Kun. This exhibition is a tongue-in-cheek look at the value placed on objects. Using sports cards as a working surface, the artist has taken an object that once had value as a collectible, and essentially defaces it, in turn giving it value in the context of contemporary art. The Public Trust’s Small Room will be transformed into a card shop featuring over 200 individual painted cards, as well as t-shirts, prints, ‘zines, pins and a collectible pennant.

We will be extending Mylan Nguyen’s installation through June 2. So if you haven’t had a chance to see it, you can catch it at the next opening.

A few shots of Mylan’s installation in progress. Further influences include Legos, Where’s Waldo, Batman, rednecks, Ren and Stimpy, old Trapper Keepers, unicorns, laser beams, Pokemon and awkward conversations with his best friend Pete. On a personal note Kyle loves pizza, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, Sharpie’s, his dog Oswald and most of all his wife Meaghan.
The next 100 people to purchase a ticket to ARTOPIA using the promo code CHASE will receive this super deluxe Taro-Kun t-shirt at the event. If that is not an incentive to purchase a ticket to ARTOPIA…well I just don’t know what could possibly get you motivated and I would get kind of sad for you.

Let’s look at the economics…since Taro studied that business in college…
If you were to purchase this shirt it would run you about $30. So based on the law of awesome deals, you should buy a VIP ticket with this promo code, because that would be like paying $15 for an all access ticket and $30 for this shirt, which is clearly worth your hard earned cash. The insane thing is that you can also get this with the purchase of a general admission ticket, which would basically be like us paying you to go to ARTOPIA, or something to that effect.

CLICK HERE TO GET YOUR TICKET

2011 Dallas Observer Artopia is December 3!
